Instagram post 2191789767355816147_6921506080 When we have an idea or something we want to pursue, we often get caught in the trap of negative (that we often deem realistic) thinking, “𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕.”
⠀
I’ve come across women this year who have said this very thing when sharing with me what they aspire to do. I get it. I too, have been and still do find myself in that very same thinking from time to time. It can lead our creativity and ambition to come to a halt and prevent us from achieving what we originally set out to do.
⠀
Over the last 2 years since starting #lipstickandink, I’ve learned a series of lessons and one of the most important has been to stay ᴀᴜᴛʜᴇɴᴛɪᴄ ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʀᴜᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴡʜᴏ ɪ ᴀᴍ. Author Helene Hegemann once said, “there’s no such thing as originality, just authenticity.” If you think about it, there’s a lot of saturation out there - at a high level, a lot of people are doing and saying the same thing. But when you actually break it down, you see that everyone has their own touch or spin on what they’re putting out.
⠀
Just because there may be someone who has already done what you want to do, it doesn’t mean there’s isn’t room for you. We all bring our own individualities, experiences and stories to the table. All of that is what makes our approach unique and that’s why I genuinely believe 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭.
⠀
I’m constantly reminding myself of this as I write my book. Much of the themes I have incorporated into my book have been written about - hundreds if not thousands of times. That alone could defeat a person. But any time I find myself reverting back to that negative thinking, I remember: My book will be unique because it’s my voice. My words. My stories. And that’s what will make it mine.
⠀
So the next time you stop yourself from doing something because “it’s already been done before” - think again. Just because it’s been done by someone else before doesn’t mean anything. Because guess what? 𝕀𝕥’𝕤 𝕟𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕓𝕖𝕖𝕟 𝕕𝕠𝕟𝕖 𝕓𝕖𝕗𝕠𝕣𝕖 𝕓𝕪 𝕐-𝕆-𝕌. And that right there is powerful💋 #ownyourpower #makeyourmark
Instagram post 2190878458141585325_6921506080 >>𝙽𝙴𝚆 𝙱𝙻𝙾𝙶 𝙿𝙾𝚂𝚃<< “Your greatness is not about what you have. It's about what you give."✨
⠀
One of my biggest missions in life is to give back. Whether that's through volunteering weekly at @misericordia, helping the homeless stay warm next month with @tiestatea, traveling to Africa in February with @venture2impact to help the people of Rwanda, or donating money throughout the year to causes I care about, I know that this is how I want to make my mark on the world. In my eyes, giving back and expecting nothing in return is what the meaning of life is all about.
⠀
Today is #GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement that empowers people and organizations to do good and transform the world around them. I absolutely love this day because it serves as a reminder for us to spread kindness, raise awareness and give back.
⠀
Today on thelipstickandink.com, I share my story about how volunteering became a passion of mine and how we can make an impact not just today, but every day: ⠀
• 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓 – Find organizations you care about where you can donate your time and see your impact in action. ⠀
• 𝑫𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆 – If you have the means, donate to nonprofits you care about. ⠀
• 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒂 𝑭𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒓 – Raise money for those less fortunate through platforms such as @GoFundMe or @Facebook. ⠀
• 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈𝑻𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒚 – Use social media for good today and spread awareness of how others can give back! ⠀
• 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 – If you have knowledge on a topic that would benefit others, look into ways of how you can teach and share what you know. ⠀
• 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝑮𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌 – Don’t just wait for GivingTuesday to give back. Think of ways how you can consistently give back on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Whether it’s by way of donating your time, your money, or your voice – I challenge you to always be thinking about how you can do good and make your mark💋 ⠀

Instagram post 2186611333390611421_6921506080 >>NEW BLOG POST<< Meet Elaine Rau. A former National Wedding Sales Manager, @elainerau unfortunately lost her brother-in-law, her job and her home all in one week. Stuck in a developing country with no job opportunities, she had to learn how to make an income ASAP. She took it upon herself and spent her last bit of savings, $12.18 to be exact, and invested in a blog domain: LadyBossBlogger.com.
⠀
Since its conception, @LadyBossBlogger has garnered a massive audience of 150K in under 2 years. It’s a platform that helps current and aspiring female entrepreneurs learn how to start, grow and scale their own online businesses and blogs.
⠀
In Elaine’s own words, she says that she wants “to be a voice of change and media influence for the younger generation of girls to grow up in a world where they are confident and take chances.”

Instagram post 2181623439231865159_6921506080 >>𝙽𝙴𝚆 𝙱𝙻𝙾𝙶 𝙿𝙾𝚂𝚃<< Do you work remotely? According to Gallup, 43% of U.S. based employees work remotely all or some of the time - myself included.
⠀
I shared on Stories recently that while I have an office to go to in Chicago, my team is scattered across the world and I don’t have any direct teammates based in Chicago with me. While there are certain benefits to it (like having a flexible schedule), it can be challenging. There’s times where I feel like I’m on an island by myself or feel left out, but I’ve learned that that only means 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒖𝒑 𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒏.
⠀
Because as a remote employee, 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝, 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫. You could be risking personal relationships with your peers and leadership. You could be holding yourself back and not getting the recognition you deserve. And you could be preventing yourself from landing a promotion and progressing in your career.
⠀
A few weeks ago, my company hosted a webinar specifically for remote employees on how to “show up” at work. I took so much from it and decided to put together a blog post based on what was discussed in conjunction with my own personal experiences I’ve learned to help me stand out.
⠀
Check it out via the link in my bio. And remember - 𝙗𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠, 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 💋

Instagram post 2180157509507387862_6921506080 𝑫𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒃𝒐𝒙? I often get the question, “do you plan to take L&I full time?” Maybe it’s genuine curiosity, but I sometimes get the feeling it’s because some people simply don’t understand the fact that I can love my full-time job and also want something to work on on the side.
⠀
Here’s the thing. 𝙄’𝙢 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙄 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝. I’m also gaining critical skills both with my job at Salesforce and my business and I find my experiences have a lot of overlap in terms of what I’m learning and how I can apply and share those with others. I don’t want to be put in a box and feel like I have to choose one or the other.
⠀
Over the weekend, I celebrated my 5 year anniversary with Salesforce. As I was reflecting on my time with the company, I recognized how much I’ve grown professionally. I’ve learned to own my power and project my voice, I’ve overcome my fears of public speaking and communicating with leadership and I’ve learned how to make my individual mark in a company of over 35,000 employees.
⠀
And with L&I, I’ve grown just the same, but in a different way. I’ve learned the meaning of authenticity and being true to who you are, I’ve overcome my fear of judgment & not giving a second thought to what people think of me and I’ve learned some tough lessons on friendship and support.
⠀
I wouldn’t trade either experience for anything and I don’t plan to any time soon. My point is, don’t let anyone put you in a box. And don’t you put yourself in a box because all you’ll be doing is 𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚒𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚏 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚊𝚖𝚊𝚣𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚙𝚘𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚋𝚒𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚒𝚎𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚊𝚠𝚊𝚒𝚝.
⠀
Let yourself be free to open up that box and follow what lights you up and gives you joy, regardless of what anyone says. Have faith in yourself that you’ll figure things out, whatever you want to do in your career and in life. ɪ ᴋɴᴏᴡ ɪ ᴀᴍ💋

Instagram post 2178012632963313544_6921506080 This quote is SO ɢᴏᴏᴅ. And it brings up something critical - 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒔. The unfortunate reality though is that women especially tend to struggle with this. My hope is that we all can get to the point that Oprah did in owning who we truly are - and not caring what others think.
⠀
L&I's latest blog post (found via the link in my bio) is all about #selfpromotion. We shouldn't feel guilty or icky about where we shine or feel nervous to share our gifts or accomplishments for fear of judgment. I went to 4 events this week (ps holy moly I'm exhausted 😂) and at just about every single one, there was a nod to 𝚋𝚎𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚊𝚞𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚌 𝚝𝚘 𝚠𝚑𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚊𝚛𝚎, 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚎 & 𝚛𝚎𝚌𝚘𝚐𝚗𝚒𝚣𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞'𝚛𝚎 𝚊𝚌𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗 𝚕𝚒𝚏𝚎 (even the things that you think are 'small' or insignificant).
⠀
Celebrating who you are and your achievements is just as important as acknowledging your struggles. That's something I learned in @google's #IAmRemarkable workshop a few months ago. I was so inspired by the content and the discussion among the participants that I decided to go ahead and put my hat in the ring to become a workshop facilitator. I knew I wanted to share this initiative with more people so I got trained and now I'm ready to start putting it into practice.
⠀
I'm contemplating hosting virtual (or possibly in-person) #IAmRemarkable workshops starting in 2020 where us women can really hone in on this topic of being confident in who we are and feeling comfortable with self-promotion and have a 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 about it. If you'd be interested in something like this, let me know in the comments! ⠀
Have a kickass weekend💋
